When Lionel Tertis was born in 1876 the viola was the Cinderella of stringed instruments and finding a teacher was virtually impossible. By the time of his death in 1975 Tertis had persuaded composers as prominent as Vaughan Williams and Holst to write serious repertoire for the instrument. This biography tells how Tertis rose from humble beginnings to become one of the 20th century's most significant string players, designing his own 'Tertis model' of viola and teaching at the Royal Academy of Music.
