Rudolf Hess's solo flight to Scotland in 1941 was one of the more bizarre events of the Second World War, apparently undertaken entirely on his own initiative to open peace negotiations with the British. This analysis seeks to throw new light on the episode by examining in detail the flight records, notes and maps used by Hess and concluding that the mission must have been planned with the assistance of both senior German authorities and the British secret services.
