The Dutch artist, William Schellinks (1623-1678), with his young travelling companion Jacques Thierry, arrived in England in 1661, seven years after the end of the first Dutch War. Unusually for the times, they travelled beyond London - as far afield as Land's End and King's Lynn - making topographical drawings for the Van der Hem Atlas, witnessing celebrations such as the Lord Mayor's Show and exploring naval and military sites. The Journal was written after Schellinks' return to Amsterdam in 1665.
