Roger Boyle, Lord Broghill (1621-79) was president of the Cromwellian regime in Scotland, 1655-6, and the driving force behind the Humble Petition and Advice, which proposed a civilian state with Cromwell as king. Cromwell's refusal of the crown marked the end of Broghill's political aspirations. In this study, his years of political influence are seen in the context of the rest of his life, especially his early years in Ireland fighting against Catholic insurgents during the Irish Rebellion.
