Originally a temporary measure introduced during the Napoleonic wars, income tax was reintroduced in 1842 and gradually extended. Tax assessments for businesses were usually destroyed, but this series of assessments for the Devizes division is a unique survival. As well being of immense local interest, the documents shed light on Victorian economic and social history nationally. Dr Colley has edited and rearranged the material into individual businesses, with an introduction and indexes.
