The only surviving example of written instructions for the design of medieval tapestries is the so-called Troyes Memoire, which dates from the late 15th century and shows how patrons and church officials communicated their wishes to artists. Textile conservator Tina Kane provides an extensive introduction and notes in this edition of the text, with facing translation, which also includes excerpts from Troyes' account books concerning the people who worked on such tapestries.
