In the first systematic study of the history of history publishing, Leslie Howsam examines the books and periodicals in which historical knowledge was captured, across a century during which the discipline saw many changes. In particular she uses the confidential correspondence preserved in publishers' archives, which reveals not only the conversations, assumptions and arguments among scholars, but also the extent to which publishers themselves influenced how writing about the past was shaped.
