Born in 1842, Osgood Hanbury Mackenzie was the son of Sir Francis Mackenzie, 12th laird of Gairloch. In 1862 Osgood began to transform the bare promontory of Inverewe into a garden which today is world-famous. His memoir offers both a valuable insight into Highland life in the 19th century and a fascinating account of the origins of Inverewe Garden. First published in 1921.
