Arthur Ransome (1884-1967) is best-known today as the author of Swallows and Amazons, his name conjuring the books' setting in an idyllic 1930s Lake District. Yet as a journalist he lived in Russia between 1913 and 1924, supported the Bolshevik revolution and had a Russian lover as well as an English wife. Documents declassified in 2005 revealed that he had worked for MI6. Here, Chambers explores Ransome's double life and 'the ease with which he adopted all the competing ideals of his generation'.
