Among the art forms that flourished during the Italian Renaissance, perhaps the most astonishing in its virtuosity was intarsia, or wood inlay, in which pictures were created with countless pieces of different woods. The intarsists used linear perspective to stunning effect in two favoured themes: cityscapes viewed through open windows and half-open cabinets filled with intriguing objects. Illustrated with photographs by Luca Sassi, this study traces the development of intarsia through the twelve finest cycles in cities across Italy.
