During his time as British Resident and Commandant of Malacca, 1803 to 1818, William Farquhar commissioned drawings of the flora and fauna of the Malay Peninsula. A total of 477 drawings were made, rendered in brilliant watercolour by Chinese artists using a mix of Chinese and western techniques. This volume presents the entire collection, with two essays and detailed captions describing the amazing array of species, from fruiting trees and birds to reptiles and fish.
