Previously a surgeon-barber, John Kay (1742-1826) set up shop as a portrait etcher in Edinburgh in 1785. This posthumously published work (commonly called Edinburgh Portraits) presents, in no particular order, Kay's etchings of people from all walks of Edinburgh life, with 'biographical; sketches and illustrative anecdotes' by James Paterson. The two volumes contain around 300 portraits, giving an extraordinarily detailed view of late 18th century Edinburgh's population. These volumes are facsimiles of the first edition (1837-8). Slip-cased.
