This is the first book to examine the material evidence of the short-lived Munster Plantation settlement in Ireland. Viewing the Tudor colony in the context of English overseas expansion, Klingelhofer shows how English settlers and displaced Irish communities were ruled by an imported Protestant elite in fortified manors and medieval castles. The book also shows how archaeology has revealed traces of a significant culture that has been, until now, eclipsed by later ideological and ethnic conflicts.
