'The Great Game' is the name given to the late 19th century Anglo-Russian power struggle in Central Asia and the Caucasus. This study describes the period before and after 1907 when the hostility between the two powers was apparently concluded, with a rapprochement in the face of the German threat. Drawing on previously unseen Russian and British archives, Siegel shows that the 'endgame' of the Anglo-Rusian confrontation was far from cordial and the two countries remained on the brink of war, saved only by the outbreak of the First World War.

Journeaux describes daily life in a community determined to lead as normal a life as possible, and in his case this meant organizing amateur performances to keep up morale. In 1936, Goebbels stated that 'a government that controls art will remain for ever', and the German film industry became inextricably linked with National Socialist propaganda. This book is an historical evaluation of the role and image of women in the feature films of the Third Reich. Fox challenges current perceptions of the National Socialist position with regard to women and examines the creation of a female film culture, as well as the 'blurring' of gender distinctions as a result of the war.

Oxford University Press Rachel Potter
601 2006 198 pages
Qty
Hardback 0199273936
Published Price £50.00 Sale Price £5.99
The emergence of Anglo-American modernist literature coincided with that of the mass democratic state, yet writers such as Yeats, Eliot and Pound were notoriously hostile towards modern democracy. Focusing on poetry, Potter reassesses the relationship between modernism and democracy by analysing the reactions of a wide range by writers, including women such as Gertrude Stein, HD and Mina Loy, and argues that the widespread scepticism about mass democracy was central to the work of modernist women writers.

Paperback 0826450865

Soren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) has been proposed as the founder of existentialism, as a forerunner of post-modernism and as the proponent of a purely humanistic religiosity. According to Julia Watkin, all of these approaches suppress the reality of Kierkegaard as a Christian thinker. Her introduction to his ethical-religious thinking shows how the Danish philosopher raised and addressed vital questions about existence and agency in a way that continues to be relevant today. Outstanding Christian Thinkers.

Zechariah 1-8 and the Frustrated Reader Religion
Sheffield Ac Mark Cameron Love
5426 1999 272 pages
Qty
Hardback 1841270202
Published Price £55.00 Sale Price £7.99
This work employs an eclectic mix of structuralist and post-structuralist theories in a doomed attempt to discover the symbolic logic at work in Zechariah 1-8's surreal narrative world. Lengthy analyses of Zechariah's intra- and intertextual logic, or lack thereof, are presented. It is finally concluded that Zechariah lacks a concrete symbolic logic, defies grammatical conventions and is 'unreadable' as it stands-and always was this way. One suggestion is that it was the intent of the author, conceived of in a postmodern way, to produce such a work. It is finally concluded that the 'post-prophetic' age of Hebrew literature has much in common with the postmodern. No jacket.
