At the beginning of the 18th century, a group of French merchants set sail from St Malo, bound for Yemen to purchase coffee. Their adventures, recorded and published by Jean de la Roque in 1716, became an instant bestseller. Reproduced here in a facsimile of an early English translation, with a new introduction and notes, their accounts of their travels, their clashes with European and Indian traders, and their observations of the manners and customs of the peninsula, are a gripping narrative, even today.
