In 1945 Britain was the world's pioneer and leading builder of jet aircraft and in the following decade produced such planes as the Comet airliner, the Vulcan bomber and the Hawker Hunter and Lightning fighters. By the early 1960s aviation companies such as Avro and Vickers were gone or facing a bleak future. This book fuses the memories of the author as schoolboy plane-spotter during British aviation's season of glory with tales of the legendary aircraft and test pilots and a rueful history of Britain's loss of self-confidence and power. Slightly off-mint.
