By the end of the 19th century, Scotland was a nation transformed. Glasgow had become the second city of the Empire, the Forth Bridge was an engineering wonder and railways had opened the Highlands to tourist industries. But alongside the grand museums, houses and hotels there was grinding poverty for the working class who sustained the great Victorian success story. All these aspects of pre-1900 Scotland are shown in this selection of photographs - the first to be published from the National Collection.
