These nine papers - five on aspects of Barra and four on Skye - were originally given at conferences arranged by the Scottish Society for Northern Studies. Reflecting the Society's multi-disciplinary approach, the essay subjects include the physical geography of Barra, Kisimul Castle and the origins of Hebridean galley-castles, evidence of the earliest settlers on the Scottish West coast, Skye and the Highland Land agitation of the 1880s, and the poetry of Skye.
