While most historians have regarded Lloyd George's early career as a mere precursor of his Westminster career, Price argues that the young politician had a very strong commitment to Home Rule, official status for the Welsh language and strong labour legislation; becoming a careerist politician after 1896 was the only way he could further the cause of the Welsh 'national movement'.
