In 868, six centuries before Gutenberg's bible, the Diamond Sutra was printed in China, the product of an already mature printing industry. Rediscovered in a cave in 1907, the book was brought to London where it is now one of the British Library's lesser-known treasures. In this introduction to the world's earliest dated printed book, Wood and Bernard explain the processes used in its creation and the most recent conservation work, as well as providing a complete reproduction of the freshly restored Sutra.
