Captain Louis Nolan was the man who delivered the order which launched the infamous Charge of the Light Brigade at Balaklava on 25 October 1854. David Buttery's sympathetic biography shows that Nolan's career, character and contribution to the army have been obscured and distorted in subsequent controversy over his conduct. Messenger of Death also throws new light on the Victorian army's officer class and gives an inside view of the most notorious of military blunders.
