Written to accompany an exhibition at The Corning Museum of Glass, New York, this volume starts by introducing the concept of alchemy in the 17th century and its relationship to artisans, then five essays trace developments in European glassmaking and advances made by alchemists and glass technologists. Among the 117 objects illustrated and discussed in the catalogue are objects for alchemical purposes and 35 gold ruby glasses. The book concludes with a discussion of 'the "alchemy" of glass today'.
