Since 1960, the pretty Shropshire town of Ludlow has hosted a celebrated arts festival each summer. What is less well known is that the tradition goes back to the 12th century. This intriguing, well- illustrated history traces the town's rich artistic heritage from the Middle Ages, through the first performance of Milton's Comus in Ludlow Castle in 1634, to the outstanding theatrical productions of the modern festival, and profiles local literary luminaries such as AE Housman and PD James.
