In a series of photographic portraits with accompanying descriptive texts, Matthew Byrne presents his personal choice of 26 churches in Cumbria, Lancashire, Greater Manchester and Merseyside. The churches have been selected for their architectural distinction, the quality of sculpture, carving or stained glass, their historical interest or picturesque setting. They range in date from the 7th century to the late 20th century and embrace every architectural style from Saxon and Norman to Liverpool's modern Roman Catholic Cathedral.
